The Pain Companion Everyday Wisdom for Living With and Moving Beyond Chronic Pain (Audible Audio Edition) Sarah Anne Shockley Author Republic Books
I've only just begun to read this book, but the chapter headings alone made it clear that this book, as the Author states, was written for MEand others like me who share the insidious isolation, depression, the feelings of failure and the eventual loss of faith and hope. The daily grind of trying to manage the simple, everyday tasks one never imagines would be exhausting, difficult and discouraging prior to when "the pain moves in". The author addresses the emotional issues that are never discussed by physicians. That "friends" do abandon you for being "egocentric about your pain" as i was told by my step Mother...on my Birthday no less. I am comforted by my early reading feeling less ALONE. However, it is the remainder of this book that I look forward to as it addresses coping skills from someone who has/or is struggling. I have been in loops with MD's, Alternatives healing, a library stack of books written by experts who have studied the issue, but not EXPERIENCED it themselves. Nine years now, a botched spine surgery, miserable medications. At bedtime I pray that I remain asleep, let my soul be taken. My body is not my friend, perhaps that will change with the experience shared by Sarah Anne Shockely. Never, ever did I have a situation that could not be solved, ALWAYS there wa an ending to it if I just tried hard and was patient. Not this time. Lastly, when I entered "how to accept being permanently disabled", this is the only book that appeared. As the sayong goes: It takes one to know one. My gratitude to Ms. Shockley for writing her story

The Pain Companion Everyday Wisdom for Living With and Moving Beyond Chronic Pain (Audible Audio Edition) Sarah Anne Shockley Author Republic Books Reviews
Sarah writes about pain in such a unique and special way, I was transported into really connected with my body as a result. She brings to light what someone might be feeling and helps identify pain and shows a magical way of communicating with your pain so you are in better rapport, rather than feeling lost, frustrated and at the whim of it. Wonderful addition to the world.
I'm in awe at how much this booklet has opened my eyes in regards to chronic pain. The author suggests a creative approach that empowers the reader to change their perspective on pain, ....surrender to creatively communicating with pain instead of fighting it, numbing it or trying to run away from it. It feels like a perfect follow-up to Louise Hay's classic "You Can Heal Your Life" .....for those who after years of struggle with pain are ready to give in and start a constructive relationship with their pain.
The Pain Companion was written to speak to people suffering from chronic physical pain and yet I recommend it for anyone facing any kind of pain--from the most concrete to existential.
Sarah Shockley's voice is one of weight. The embodies the wisdom that comes from deep experience and the willingness to be both a teacher and a student.
It is no coincidence that some of the most powerful medicine comes from people who live their stated practice. Sarah is one of these people and I am so grateful that she is sharing her practice in written form via The Pain Companion.
I, too, have a neurological disorder with no known cure. It was once called "the suicide disease".
When I got this book, I had high hopes. I'm afraid I'm past these ideas, but I am sure they will work with those people with new chronic pain, not someone ten years in. I've tried these, and I am beyond them.
Thankfully & Finally, someone is writing from the perspective of the person in pain. What a wonderful gift! The establishment generally tells us what and how we are in pain. Now we have a written voice and response for those that do not understand the ongoing struggle of chronic pain. It is different and shows up differently than how medical professionals view our experience. Thank you for sharing your story and hence Our Stories! May we all begin to learn how to live without pain!
I suffer from back pain that is sometimes pretty severe, and I found this book that talks about what is is like to live with pain that is very clear, insightful, and comforting. It's incredibly helpful to know that someone else really gets it. I also found the information on how to deal with the shame and loneliness of being in pain very useful - great suggestions there - and the exercises are easy to use and really do help. This would be a great resource to buy for friends living with pain, and for giving to people who don't understand what it is like to live with chronic pain. I think Doctors and Therapists would benefit greatly from reading it as well.
This is an important book for those living with chronic pain by someone living with it and through it. Sarah's story is infused with the harshness and profundity of pain experienced on a personal level. I was especially moved by her Dear Pain letters and realized that Sarah could have been talking to me as I have experienced emotional pain in my life in the past, and those letters reflected similar feelings many moons ago when I would write in my journal about my pain. So, it's not just physical pain that people suffer from, but those who have experienced grief, loss, heartache and anguish who will benefit tremendously. As a healer and Life Coach, I know a lot of other healers and alternative therapists, and I believe this is simply one book that should be recommended to their patients or clients who are living with chronic pain. This book was written not just from Sarah's heart, but from the very depths of her soul and I believe her soul's mission was to write a book that approached pain in a completely different way. The Pain Companion is a valuable tool and resource to those who share a similar experience through the physical discomfort of pain. Sarah's guidance through her book and words of encouragement, will empower others to approach their pain from an altogether and unique modus operandi. Praise to Sarah.
